New Hibernaculum at the Nature Center

A hibernaculum has been added to the property at the Nature Center. Recent studies suggest that snakes are valuable in reducing disease threats posed by high rodent populations. Many snake populations have declined in Wisconsin due to habitat loss and human persecution.

Pictured Below (left): The hole is about seven feet deep.  It has to be dug below the frost line to ensure the well being of the snakes and other reptiles.

Pictured Above (right): The hole was filled with rocks.  As the rocks were put in, logs were tossed in the hole to separate some stones to make sure the snakes could crawl down into the hole.  In the spring, the warmth of the sun on the rocks will help the cold-blooded reptiles to increase their body heat.
