September Bird Club
Fall was in the air when CEI Birders met for their September meeting. The first ever Manitowoc County sighting of a swallowtail kite was announced by one member. The declining numbers of fall migrating warbler species and numbers was discussed, with the drop attributed in part to the wildfires at their nesting sites in Canada. Also seen were sharp declines in the number of oven birds nesting at Collins Marsh. Relying on wooded areas to build their nests, ovenbirds have seen a large portion of their potential nesting sites eliminated with the dying of the ash trees.
Birders at Collins Marsh eagerly anticipate the installation of a MOTUS station on the former Fire Lookout Tower. More information to follow as this project is implemented…
Our adopt a highway litter pickup is planned for October 4th at 10:00 with a rain date of October 5th. Members are asked to meet at the Neustadter Nature center to pick up supplies.
